Abstract

Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) college students face unique cultural, social, and systemic challenges which can affect their mental health and help-seeking behaviors. Despite the fact that the literature documents stigma and underutilization of counseling among Asian Americans, minimal research examines APIDA students at Midwestern Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). Drawing from a phenomenological study of historically minoritized students at a midwestern university, this article examines APIDA students’ behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs toward mental health. Findings revealed minimal trust in institutional counseling and a strong reliance on informal supports including family, peers, and spiritual practices. Implications emphasized culturally responsive counseling, counselor education reform, and institutional policies that integrate cultural humility and APIDA-centered practices.
