Chinese and Vietnamese International Students’ Perceptions and Utilization of University Counseling Services in South Korea
Abstract
This study surveyed 387 Chinese and Vietnamese international students in South Korea to examine their perceptions and utilization of university counseling services. Findings revealed low awareness, with 72.3% of students reporting little knowledge of the centers, and a service utilization rate of only 40.6%. Students primarily sought counseling for academic and career concerns, citing a lack of information and time as major barriers. Regarding program preferences, Chinese students expressed a preference for group counseling sessions involving other international students, whereas Vietnamese students prioritized programs focused on cultural and leisure activities. The study proposes strategies to increase utilization, including active promotion, ensuring confidentiality, and expanding multilingual support.
