Singaporean Counselors’ Use of Spirituality in Counseling
Abstract
Spirituality is a difficult concept to understand and there is no standard definition available. This qualitative study focused on 10 Singapore counselors’ understanding and use of spirituality in the counseling process. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling, and transcribed interviews were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin’s grounded theory. Twelve themes in four categories revealed that within the Singaporean context of integrating spirituality in counseling, the combination of the causal condition of participants’ understanding of spirituality and the intervening condition of personal characteristics led them to take their strategic actions of the use of spirituality in counseling. This produced their views of the future role of spirituality in counseling. Recommendations for future research and implications for clinical practice and counselor education are discussed.
