Research on Sleep of Children and Adolescents: Implications for East Asian Counselors
Received August 2, 2013 Revision received December 15, 2013 Accepted January 17, 2014
Abstract
Insufficient sleep and sleep disorders in children and adolescents have been identified as precipitators of risks in many areas, including health, cognitive functioning, and socioemotional adjustment. While these problems have been studied worldwide for some time, most research in East Asian countries is relatively recent. This paper reviews this research, summarizes several areas of basic scientific and medical knowledge about children’s sleep, and offers suggestions for counselors in screening, diagnosis, referral, and treatment.
