An Exploratory Factor Analysis of the Korean MMPI-2 in a Sample of North Korean Female Refugees
Received October 31, 2011, Revision received January 30, 2012, Accepted February 15, 2012
Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to examine the scale-level factor structure of the Korean Minnesota Multiphasic PersonalityInventory – Second Edition (MMPI-2) when administered to female North Korean refugees living in South Korea in order toinvestigate its construct validity. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using Promax rotation was utilized in the study. Theparticipants were 2,738 North Korean refugee women, between 18 and 60 years of age (M = 34.75; SD = 8.25), and the scalesincluded in the analysis were the 6 validity scales (Infrequency (F), Back Infrequency (Fb), Infrequency Psychopathology (Fp),Lie (L), Correction (K), Superlative Self-Preservation (S)) and 9 standard clinical scales excluding Masculinity-Femininity (Mf).The EFA findings were compared with those of the results of Han (1993) on a sample of South Korean female college studentsand with those of Butcher et al. (1989) on his normative sample of female college students from the United States. Contrary to thetwo previous scale-level EFA findings on the MMPI-2, the current study supported a three-factor solution as opposed to theconventionally supported four-factor solution. The factor structure and scale loadings thus identified are discussed in light of thecross-cultural validity of the Korean MMPI-2, its clinical implications, and the limitations of this study. The overall findingssuggest that the Korean MMPI-2 can be a cross-culturally valid psychological assessment tool for North Korean female refugees.
