A Comprehensive Review of Research on Child and Adolescent Spirituality: Evidence for the Inclusion of Spirituality in School Counseling

Abstract
Within the context of school-based counseling as it occurs in North America and the Asia Pacific region, this article reviewscurrent developments in the area of childhood and adolescent spirituality research. Utilizing positive psychology as atheoretical and practical foundation, attention is initially focused on important definitional issues. The authors advocate for apsychological constructivist conceptualization of spirituality. Research trends showing the value of spirituality to studenthealth, well-being, and assorted related constructs (e.g., developmental assets, resiliency, and protective factors) are discussed.Student spiritual development issues and viable assessment tools are surveyed, followed by a research synopsis documentingconnections between spirituality and brain function. Suggestions for future research and the implications for school counselingpractice complete the discussion.
